Assessment and evaluation have always been important components of teaching and learning tasks and are therefore important compontents of work involving technology as well. Rubrics are useful tools in the assessment and evaluation process. Rubrics can be created by teachers and students to identify guidelines and challenges for demonstration of learning. Rubrics provide guidance, direction, motivation, and accountability in completion of learning tasks and may be used with research and writing activities, interviews, discussions and debates, and group and lab activites. They may also be used in conjuction with other technology assessment and evaluation tools such as electronic portfolios and mutlimedia presentations. Kathy Schrock's Guide for Assessment Rubrics at http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/assess.html provides excellent examples of rubrics as well as sites for rubric construction.
